Hachiman Hikigaya is a high school student with a cynical and often pessimistic view of life and youth. He is highly intelligent, particularly in understanding the underlying motives and behaviors of those around him, though this insight does not extend to a high opinion of himself or others. Hachiman Hikigaya's outlook has led him to adopt a solitary lifestyle, avoiding close relationships under the belief that they often lead to misunderstanding and pain.

Personality-wise, Hachiman Hikigaya is introverted, with a sharp wit and a tendency for blunt honesty, which often comes off as harsh or insensitive.
